Kosmopolis Rotterdam has two municipal partners that use the same first name. Like Rotterdam, the urban partners in Utrecht and The Hague also deploy their city as their surname. Kosmopolis is an initiative of the Dutch government and the country’s three major cities. It is financed by the City of Rotterdam, the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mission Kosmopolis Rotterdam aims at arousing people’s curiosity about each other’s story, history and culture. It deploys the power of art and culture in order to create connections between people and to develop new forms of cultural expression.
Objective Kosmopolis Rotterdam contributes to the construction of a cultural infrastructure that serves the broad layers of Rotterdam’s population. This is achieved by forging links between cultures in the neighbourhoods and international cultural diversity, between new public groups and established cultural institutions, researchers and artists, between young and old from a variety of backgrounds, and between people of ideas and those of action.
Starting points Kosmopolis Rotterdam is based on art’s imaginative powers and culture’s connective capacity. Our favoured working method is bottom-up; the activities focus on culture in the neighbourhoods yet their structure transcends their locality while being both large-scale and broadly based. Although Kosmopolis Rotterdam feels that it’s important to talk to one another, we nonetheless prefer to organise joint artistic productions. In addition, we devote particular attention to women, young people (15+) and those aged 55 and older.
Collaboration Kosmopolis Rotterdam seeks alliance with programmes, organisations and key figures who know how to bring together both people and cultures. We work with the formal and informal cultural circuits, with the Erasmus University Rotterdam and other research institutions, with new media expertise centres, artists, community workers, residents and, of course, our municipal partners: Kosmopolis Utrecht and Kosmopolis The Hague.
Programme Kosmopolis Rotterdam deploys the entire city as a platform for a varied programme of themes, disciplines and presentations: from youth lifestyle to religious experience, from storytelling to user-generated video, from table talk to outdoor exhibitions.
Programme guidelines The programme is constructed according to three content-based guidelines: identity and representation, cultural exchange and transcultural developments.
Projects Kosmopolis Rotterdam invites “hands-on” experts - the people who are intimately involved with integration and diversity - to jointly organise public discussions about current issues concerning identity. Cultural exchange is emphasised in community art projects and in those involving entrepreneurs, artists and students from professional courses. An international perspective on diversity provides insight into new, transcultural developments. Kosmopolis Rotterdam presents everyday examples of transcultural developments in photography, the visual arts and new media projects.
